Everything Nobody Tells You About Yacht Party Rules in Miami
We'd rather you know this before you book than find out the hard way. Here are the real rules — no sugarcoating.
Coast Guard 13-Person Rule
Under the Passenger Vessel Safety Act of 1993, private charter yachts are limited to 13 passengers maximum (plus crew), regardless of yacht size. Fines exceed $40,000. This surprises nearly everyone — a massive superyacht still can't carry more than 13 guests without a Certificate of Inspection (COI). For groups of 14–26, we book 2 yachts that cruise together. For 27–50+, we use USCG-inspected commercial vessels with COI.
BYOB Rules — What You Can and Can't Bring
BYOB is legal on Florida charter vessels under Florida Statute 565.02. We provide coolers, ice, water, soda, and cups. No glass containers (universally enforced for safety). No red wine (it permanently stains teak decks and vinyl). Bring quality liquor from Total Wine — a group of 13 can bring premium drinks for $200–$400 total vs. $1,500+ for an open bar package with unknown quality.
Music & Noise Rules on Biscayne Bay
City of Miami: music audible from beyond 100 feet constitutes a noise violation. Miami music curfew: 11 PM to 7 AM. Miami-Dade County: boat noise capped at 90 decibels. Reality for your party: DJs and sound systems work great on the open water away from residential areas. The restrictions primarily affect boats anchored near Star Island late at night. Our captains know exactly where to position for maximum volume.
Decoration Dos and Don'ts
No balloons (they fly off and pollute the ocean — it's actually illegal per MARPOL regulations). No glitter or confetti (impossible to clean from teak). No tape or adhesives on yacht surfaces. YES to: banners, flowers, LED lights, table décor, themed props, custom signs. We offer pre-set decoration packages so everything is ready when you board.
Swimming Rules
Day charters: swimming at the sandbar is the highlight — shallow turquoise water, perfect for photos and floating. Sunset charters: swimming possible but seasonal (water temp and daylight dependent). Night charters: swimming is not recommended for safety reasons. Life jackets are always available. Children under 6 must wear life jackets at all times.
Tipping the Captain & Crew
Captain/crew gratuity of 15–20% of the charter fee is customary and greatly appreciated — this goes directly to the crew. On a $2,500 charter, that's $375–$500. Cash is preferred but not required. We mention this upfront because many competitors hide it and let it surprise you at the end.
